Hello beauties and handsomes! I have been hearing a lot of talk about this topic and I wanted to put it up for a poll. What do you think about the addition of male character models into the game? What are your opinions on them? Let me know through your vote in a poll and comment as well! Looking forward to hearing from everyone.

I think it might be a nice idea, but it could introduce problems. People will likely start drama revolving around romantic roleplays, which is completely obnoxious. I've played other games where this was a big issue! The devs would also have to rewrite a lot of quests and even lore for the game, which would probably take a lot of time. I myself don't see a huge need for it, because I'm assuming that the majority of players are females, and that is generally the target demographic. I think if adding male avatars was executed properly, it could be good for the game and add a lot of diversity. But for now, I'm doubtful that SSO could pull it off. If they did manage to add this feature without trouble, I would be pretty excited!

Indifferent. I've been playing video games since I was 5, so I've had many a one that forced me to play a guy. Sometimes they want to tell the story from a guy's perspective, sometimes a girl's, sometimes it doesn't matter. If the game still provides me that escape, it's all the same to me.

I think there was a conversation about this back in general discussions, but its interesting to see it in a poll. As Ode said here and I said back then, it doesn't really matter to me. If it adds to the story and doesn't change the mechanics of the game, go for it. But there's nothing wrong with playing as a certain gender in a game. Being someone who uses they/them pronouns, I suppose it makes sense that gender based games don't really bother me, but its also just an indifference to gender because you're playing in a story as a character, not yourself. Its cool and all if the character can be designed to look as you, but its still a character. Games are meant as an escape for me, not a way to live as myself in another world and story heh. Personally, I like that SSO made their game specifically intended for girls/women, if only because most gamers are male and its outside of the normal trend. If people who are male or of any gender want to play the game, there are options to make their character less feminine if they wish.

meh, i dont exactly think its a great idea, i mean it would be good for some of the male players but i think it would cause a lot of problems, if you were to add male models then some guys would play the game, But thats not the problem, the problem is that there would be some sso players acting appropriate, Players would probably start pretending they have boyfriends and girlfriends, Like for instance animal jam, there are both female and male players, when i played the game everyone had an online boyfriend or something, the game became so inappropriate that it went on news, if you look up animal jam news report on youtube your certain to find stuff about it being an inappropriate game just because it had both male and female players, and its a child game, 2-7 year olds play this game, and most are acting inappropriate. I just think it will cause some problems, i honestly like the game, it was intended for girls, and theres also the fact that most gamers are guys so its nice to have a game where its all girls playing it. Guys are welcome to play the game if they want, i know some guy players in sso, even if the game was intended for females. But as long as the game still has the same escape for me i dont think it would be terrible to have males play the game, im mainly worried about how players would act, plus it would be a lot of work to adjust the game so its not so feminine, but i think sso could do it
I don't think we need male characters in the game. One of the reasons is above, that it could create inappropriate behaviour from people. Also I don't think SSO would add male avatars. I've read in one of their replies to comments on facebook that they intended it to be a game mainly for girls since many games are more intended for the male population. If boys want to play it, they have to just roll with the fact that they will be a girl in-game. The same way girls just have to roll with the fact that about more than half of online and PC games are intended for boys therefore the girls would have to play as male characters, e.g. car racing, you can only play a male in these type of games. SSO is very proud that they created a game that focuses on female gamers, rather than male gamers, and I think they made an excellent choice making it female avatar only game. Also, I think programming wise, they would have to rewrite majority of the dialogues in the game, as many include things like "You go, girl." and such. This would mean they would have to write in a choice for the NPC based on gender so that it would say "You go, girl." for female avatars and "Good job, man." or something like that for male characters. I'm not saying that this is impossible, I'm just saying that it is time consuming and I think it would throw off the balance of the whole game. But that is just my opinion. I'm more than happy just seeing girls in the game. It's not like we have a lack of male characters as NPCs. And if you really want to pretend you have a boyfriend or whateverthingy, go to Derek who's always kinda flirting when you talk to him...

I would love male characters to be in sso! I loved how feminine the game was when I joined and kind of made me want to feel more feminine..but..from my point of view (since I'm a male), I think they should add male characters into the game instead of only having one gender... I understand the game is supposed to make females feel like they can do so much more and they have amazing imagination...but I think it's kind of unfair males have no way to be in the game without having a more based girlish name and style... I also understand that some kids have an issue with having male models..(the drama of which guy is their bf or something..or omg they're gay (which there's nothing wrong with that) *as well as the romance roles that happen daily* ) Can't people just let both genders have equal rights in a game..? Instead of making a huge deal that it's bad because they're too selfish to think about how male players feel?

SSO is too selfish to care about how male players feel, which is why there aren't male players?! I don't think so. The entire game is based on female characters and SSO has said themselves that their reasoning has to do with the fact that there are already so many great games with awesome male characters - why not have something for the girls? As a female, adult player, I feel that this is a fantastic way to empower young girls and it certainly isn't exclusionary to boys - I mean, what's wrong with being a girl in a game?! I've even seen someone go as far as to say that they are *embarrassed* to play SSO because they have to be a girl. What the heck is so embarrassing about being a girl?
On the flip side, I've been gaming for over two decades now and have definitely played as more male characters (not by choice) than female, but I honestly haven't cared one bit. Similarly, my boyfriend and many guy friends don't care about whether they play as a girl character or not.

It doesn't really bother me because Ive played male characters in other MMOs before without second thought. I also know plenty of guys who choose female characters in MMOs like WoW or Guild Wars 2. The whole Star Stable series has been about the soul riders (who are girls) saving the world so I think it would be weird if they randomly changed the story line that they have had for so long. They would have to change all the quests and stories if they added male characters which seems like a lot of work.

I say no to male characters.
Star Stable was supposed to make girls have a game to themselves. If you're a boy, fine, SSO doesn't care. They've added the option for the "boy" hairstyles, and baggy pants, and other things that can help make your character "look" more like a boy. Like the eyes that don't really have thick eyelashes. They have boy-ish names. (Have Gun, as an example. So for example, you could be Gun Nightwolf, which sounds like a "boy" name to me) Also, we already have a "dating"/"romance" problem on this game. Having a male option would escalate this. The story would also be messed up. In the beginning of the game, the story is that a girl is going to come to save Jorvik. There are also tons of dialogue in the game that refers to your character as a female. The developers would have to go through thousands of character dialogue to dig up the girl pronouns and to change that for the male characters.
Also, there would be tons of clothing items that would need to be re-modeled to the male model. The male model probably won't be able to cross-dress, so SSO will probably have to make male alternates for these clothing items (skirts, dresses). They would also have to make sure his model fits in the horse right, and with all the animations the SSO team is making now for the females, they would have another character model to animate.
Also, if anything.. I think they would have to change some of Derek's dialogue and whatever other characters appear to have a "thing" for yours.
Lastly, SSO would have to stop boasting about being one of the ONLY MMO's (if not the only) in the world that is for kids and ONLY has a girl as your gender option.
TLDR; Male models would cause more "dating" issues to happen (and while lesbians & bisexual people do exist, I haven't seen ANY of those people dating on SSO at all, with their gender preference at least) The game was also just not built to have a "male" player-character. There's just going to be a lot more cons than pros. It just doesn't work with the way that SSO has been built so far.
Like other people and I have said, if you're a boy and you like SSO, you can always get a more masculine name and look. As always most people shouldn't judge you for being a male and to play a "girl" game, because this game isn't just for girls. It's for everyone, the only thing is just that you can't have a male character because it would ruin the story among other things.
Also: My dad likes to play as girls in games, and I've read a few other things about guys playing as girls in game. Some said were just like, "If you can have a character that you like looking at, well you should probably be them because you're going to be staring at them for the rest of the game." and others just enjoyed playing as female characters.

SSO is probably so much more to us and I completely understand that male players would feel a bit mistreated, my fiancé did too. I myself wouldn't say no to an option for male characters. But: See through the developer's eyes. The foremost thing about Star Stable is that it is a game designed for children - a game heavily moderated, so parents can let their child play without worrying. Females on the internet in general receive a massive amount of hate and harassment just for being female, so here we have a game that is intended for young girls, trying to give them a rather safe environment to play online. This is a complete niche game. Adding male characters would not only mess up the story plot but the whole idea of a specific target group and the moderation aspect would suffer greatly as well.

Tiffany Sunmountain: am I the only one who can't "fish" or craft flower crowns?
Jun 21, 2019 0:10:29 GMT 10
Seryth: From what I've noticed, it really seems like the people having the most technical issues with the game are the ones using laptops. As someone who uses a gaming desktop - in the 6 years I’ve been playing SSO, I’ve never had a single issue with the game.
Jun 21, 2019 1:19:15 GMT 10
Seryth: I know it’s not feasible for everyone to buy a gaming system, but it’s something to consider as game development technology improves. Unfortunately, basic laptops just aren’t built to handle the stress of gaming and the components wear out much faster.
Jun 21, 2019 1:19:28 GMT 10
lilymoonie: Seryth I'm having the same problem as lelpel (for the second time now) and I'm on a desktop, so it's not just laptops that are having these issues. I do agree with laptops not being the strongest for gaming, but for some they're the only option.

curiousexplorers: Seryth it's not just laptops having problems, some of us got a new and good gaming system to be able to play and still have problems with SSO too that they do not have with other games. If even clean reinstall doesn't work try changing the default folder.
Jun 21, 2019 2:27:36 GMT 10
Seryth: I agree-desktops definitely aren't immune to issues. Maybe I've just been lucky to not have experienced any problems. It's unfortunate that the team's usual response is just to reinstall. Hopefully you guys get your issues resolved soon!

patriciawindpeak: Wait, you guys have the new launcher? Weird. I have the old one and the only thing I get with it is the "Installation Error" from having it open for too long.
